LEGISLATIVE ALERT: President’s Executive Order on AI

As I am sure you are aware, President Joe Biden recently issued an Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence.

We are still reviewing the Order and accompanying Fact Sheet, and will work with our industry partners to respond and engage as appropriate. We do note that in the section on Protecting American Privacy “the President calls on Congress to pass bipartisan data privacy legislation to protect all Americans…” and directs the following actions: 

• Protect Americans’ privacy by prioritizing federal support for accelerating the development and use of privacy-preserving techniques,
• Strengthen privacy-preserving research and technologies,
• Evaluate how agencies collect and use commercially available information…and strengthen privacy guidance for federal agencies to account for AI risks,
• Develop guidelines for federal agencies to evaluate the effectiveness of privacy-preserving techniques.

AAF supports the President’s call for bipartisan data privacy legislation and will continue to work with our partners in Privacy for America to encourage Congress to pass such a law.

We will continue to monitor developments in this important area and welcome any comments or thoughts you may have.
